Some interesting facts

The coronet, or crown of the Ramsgate civic mace is a replica of Queen Victoria's state Crown. The state crown is usually remade for each new monarch.

The armorial bearings on the centre of the badge have to be registered with the College of Arms.

Ramsgate became a "Limb of Liberty" of Sandwich in the reign of Richard III in 1483.

Albion House was built in 1789.

The Ramsgate Harbour that we see today was built between 1749 and 1850.

The first town in England to establish it's Mayorality was Thetford in 1198.

The "Reform Act" of 1832 paved the way for the "Municipal Corporation Act" of 1835. This was when the name Mayor was first used in Ramsgate, prior to this Ramsgate was governed for nearly 30 years by a Deputy called Wotton the Younger.

The "Local Government Act" of 1972 came into effect in 1974. This was when Ramsgate lost it's Borough status, Thanet District Council was formed and Charter Trustees came into being.

There are 17 Charter Trustees in Ramsgate, who are all Thanet District Councillors with the Town Mayor at the head.
