The Montefiore Action Project (MAP) is a
group of local residents living in Ramsgate, Kent,England.
The group was formed in 1998 when it was realised
that there was a proposal to residentially develop the land
surrounding the Sir Moses Montefiore Synagogue and
Mausoleum in Ramsgate.
MAP has been predominantly self financing with each
member contributing money and time to the cause of
protecting the site for the benefit of all people. A
sponsored cycle ride by one of the members raised much
needed funds in the beginning, with funds from local
businesses assisting with the setting up of the group. The
local Council gave us some money, via the Community Chest,
to repair a damaged wall. A donation of
£5000 from Royal & SunAlliance has greatly
increased our ability to protect the
site. Another donation from Jupiter Asset
Management has meant that we shall be able to repair paths
within the site. We have also received donations from
people outside the Project after our work was publicised in
the London Jewish News and Thanet Gazette.
Recently a water colour of the Synagogue and
Mausoleum painted by Denys Le Fevre a fellow of the Royal
Society of Arts, who lives locally, has been purchased by
the group. Prints of the original, approximately 10 by 8
inches as shown below, are now on sale for £12.50
unframed. A print in a frame measuring approximately 18 x
20 inches, with information about Sir Moses and the artist,
is available for £25. For more information, or to
order one of these, contact us through the e-mail address
below.
The original is still available for purchase for
£250. If the lucky purchaser would like to come down
to Ramsgate to collect the picture we will arrange for the
artist to present it to them.
